Transcript from an interview on November 12, 2024.
You recently released a book that has now been on the best seller list for the second week in a row. Can you tell us about it?
Marda Harper: I would love to; this is actually my second book. I wrote a book several years ago, published in April of 2021 that received a lot less press. However it was my first book, my baby if you will, and it was the catalyst for this latest book. I received a lot of positive feedback from that first book as well as questions and criticism. I took all of that and got fired up. I’ve also had many new experiences over the last couple of years that shaped this book. I am ecstatic and humbled to be among the best seller, there are some great books on that list so congratulations to all of them. What is more meaningful to me is the individual feedback I have gotten from the readers. This book is deeply personal and vulnerable, meant to connect with people on that personal level. When I receive communication from individuals who express that reading my thoughts and feelings poured out on to paper has made a positive impact on their life, this is my greatest reward.
Where do you find your inspiration?
Marda Harper: I am an observer and that includes being an observer of me, my actions and reactions. When I was young I often felt alone and misunderstood. I was pretty sure that no one thought quite like I did and that no one would understand if I tried to relate. Those feelings kept me isolated and insecure for many years. I have come to an understanding that every thought I have had has been shared at some time by some person on this earth. We are all connected and none of us alone. Sharing our thoughts and feelings with each other we find connections, we see commonality. If even one person feels less alone, more understood or more connected than I have accomplished my goal. It is worth all the late nights, early mornings and hands cramps, because I am old school and still write mostly by hand.
What keeps you going?
Marda Harper: My family. They are my number one, my joy and my refuge. My husband is a great support, always believing in me and my kiddos are my biggest cheerleaders. I do this for me; it brings me great satisfaction and sense of purpose. My family has made some sacrifices for me to see this dream through, and they have helped me reach the finish line.
You shared with me that due to the positive response to the book you have decided to do something special.
Marda Harper: Yes! I have been so blessed in my life and I feel as we have been blessed then we should be a blessing to others. I have decided that for each book that is sold, a book will be donated to women’s shelters, half-way homes, and at risk youth or an equivalent dollar amount donated.
You give your time regularly to several great organizations, can you tell us about one that is near and dear to your heart?
Marda Harper: I am always discovering ways that I can give my time as I have created a life where I have an abundance of time freedom and I feel out time is a precious gift we can give. We each have unique gifts, talents and abilities that we can share to uplift our fellow human and thereby all of humanity. One group that brings me so much joy and satisfaction is a young women’s empowerment group that I host. I work with girls between age 7 and 17, educating them about their unique anatomy and physiology, how their body works and creating and establishing boundaries. We get into age appropriate group discussions on relationships from parental to romantic, friendships, and challenges they face. It is very much led by the group and I act as a mediator and voice of reason during discussion. I want a safe place where girls can talk openly with their peers about things that are on their mind. I have collaborated with other professionals for additional education and support in areas where we see need.
What is your plan for this next year?
Marda Harper: I am really excited about this year. I have several speaking engagements across the country and two overseas. My family and I are going to take this awesome opportunity to travel together and discover new places. We absolutely love to travel as a family. I am continuing work with my youth outreach program and have created a mastermind to establish a type of curriculum that can be shared freely so that we can create a positive change in our most precious population. I will be continuing my writing as it has become joyous habit and we will see what come of that. Otherwise I can be a bit of a home body. I love the comforts of home and I can work from anywhere so you would find me at either my lovely Florida home or enjoying the breathtaking mountains views from our home in North Carolina. I truly live a blessed life of authentic liberty and I am ecstatic that this is my life.
